Deadly Queensboro Bridge crash exposes e-bike safety crisis in NYC
A deadly crash on the Queensboro Bridge bike lane has raised fresh concerns about e-bike and scooter safety in New York City. Two people died in the collision on Thursday, one riding a bicycle and the other an illegal high-speed e-scooter. The incident highlights ongoing risks in the city’s narrow and busy bike lanes. The crash involved a cyclist and a rider on an illegal e-scooter capable of speeds over 50 mph. The bike lanes on the Queensboro Bridge are tight, separated only by a painted white line, making them hazardous for fast-moving traffic.
E-bike enforcement remains difficult due to their ability to weave through congestion and the lack of speed cameras targeting bikes. Current cameras in the city only read vehicle licence plates, leaving cyclists and e-bike riders unmonitored. This year, 12 people have died in e-bike or scooter incidents, double the number from the same period in 2023. The city’s bike lane speed limit is 15 mph, but illegal scooters often far exceed it. Cyclists and e-bike riders have repeatedly voiced worries about reckless speeds on the bridge. The NYPD’s approach to enforcement has shifted. Last year, officers issued criminal court summonses for reckless riding. Now, they are instructed to give only civil summonses, reducing penalties for offenders.
The fatal crash underscores the dangers of high-speed e-scooters in crowded bike lanes. With enforcement challenges and rising deaths, the city faces pressure to improve safety measures. The Queensboro Bridge remains a key focus for both riders and authorities.
