Gwen Moore Proposes Ending Education Tax Credit to Fund Public Schools
US Representative Gwen Moore has introduced legislation to abolish the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit. The Milwaukee Democrat wants to redirect the funds to support public schools instead. Her proposal has sparked debate among education advocates. The Education Freedom Tax Credit currently allocates money for tutoring, new computers, and other student aid. Moore argues these funds should go towards Title I funding, Head Start, special education, and universal school meals. She believes public schools would benefit more from direct financial support.
Brian Jodice of the American Federation for Children criticised the plan. He pointed to mixed results from similar schemes and accused teachers' unions of opposing the credit to protect their own interests. Meanwhile, Wisconsin remains outside the program after Governor Tony Evers declined to opt in. Moore’s proposal would end the existing tax credit system. If passed, the funds would shift to public school programs. The legislation now faces further discussion in Congress.
