Powai Lake's promenade set for a Rs 1.85 crore makeover by BMC

Powai Lake, one of Mumbai’s largest urban water bodies, may soon see a major redevelopment. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed appointing a consultant to create a master plan for its promenade. The move comes as the existing walkway, built in 2008, has fallen into disrepair due to neglect and recent infrastructure works. The BMC’s proposal seeks approval to hire AECOM Asia Company Limited for Rs 1.85 crore. The firm would prepare detailed designs, conduct public consultations, and submit cost estimates within four months. The civic body also wants an exemption from the usual tender process, arguing that AECOM’s expertise in waterfront planning justifies the direct appointment.

Powai Lake spans 223 hectares with a catchment area of 6.61 sq km. Its promenade has suffered damage from metro and sewerage projects, accelerating the need for restoration. The BMC aims to turn the lake into a financially self-sustaining urban destination while addressing environmental concerns to maintain ecological balance. If approved, the consultant will deliver a redevelopment roadmap within four months. The plan aims to improve public infrastructure and ensure the lake’s long-term sustainability. The BMC’s proposal highlights the urgency of restoring a key civic space in Mumbai.
