HKUST Unveils Groundbreaking MR × AI Digital Art Exhibition Across Two Cities

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has launched the SURREALITY Mixed Reality (MR) × Artificial Intelligence (AI) Digital Art Cross-City Exhibition. It marks a key moment in the university’s drive to blend technology, humanities, and cross-regional innovation. The event premiered today at the Clear Water Bay campus with 19 selected works on display. The exhibition features nearly 50 works by over 70 digital artists worldwide. It highlights HKUST’s dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration and computational creativity. Among the pieces is an MR version of the classic GFP Bunny by Prof. Eduardo KAC, alongside Echoes of Earth 2.0, a visionary AI project by HKUST(GZ) PhD student ZHANG Yishuai.

The showcase turns the campus into an immersive art space powered by VR, MR, and AI. It includes contributions from renowned international and Chinese Mainland artists, as well as faculty and students from both HKUST campuses. Prof. Lionel NI Ming-Shuan, President of HKUST(GZ), called it the world’s first large-scale MR × AI art exhibition.

The event will open at HKUST(GZ) on 17 June 2026 and run until 31 July 2026. After this, it will return to Hong Kong for public viewing. Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST, described the exhibition as a major step in the university’s mission to merge technology with the arts. The exhibition demonstrates the potential of digital art combined with cutting-edge technology. It will travel between campuses, offering public access to its innovative displays. The project reinforces HKUST’s role in fostering global interdisciplinary creativity.
