Blykalla and Hitachi Energy team up to accelerate next-gen nuclear reactors

Blykalla and Hitachi Energy have agreed to work together on next-generation nuclear reactors. The partnership aims to speed up the development of advanced modular reactors in Europe and the US. Both companies signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise their long-term collaboration. Blykalla is currently developing the SEALER, a lead-cooled advanced modular reactor. Its first commercial model, the SEALER-55, will have a capacity of 140 MWt/55 MWe and is expected to be operational in the early 2030s. The company has also applied to build a power plant in Norrsundet, Sweden, featuring six SEALER reactors with a combined output of 330 MWe. Government funding for this project has been requested.

Under the new agreement, Hitachi Energy will integrate its electrification and grid expertise into a standard solution tailored for small modular reactors. The focus will be on grid connection designs, on-site electrical systems, and digital tools for construction and operation. Both firms will also develop a joint offering for high-power customers, starting with data centres and energy-intensive industries. The collaboration merges Blykalla’s reactor technology with Hitachi Energy’s experience in grid integration and energy software. Their joint efforts will optimise electrical systems and digital monitoring for the SEALER reactors. The goal is to bring advanced nuclear solutions to market faster.
