NYC's free outdoor pools open with expanded swim programs for 2024
New York City’s free outdoor pools opened for the season on Saturday, May 27. Over 50 outdoor public pools across the five boroughs will welcome swimmers daily until September 13. Last summer, more than 1 million people visited these facilities, highlighting their popularity. This year brings several updates to the city’s pool program. Morning adult lap swim is now available at 10 pools, and senior water aerobics classes are returning citywide. The free Learn to Swim program will also expand, with classes offered at 18 outdoor pools.
Eleven of the city’s pools are marking 90 years in operation this year. However, Brooklyn’s Red Hook Pool remains temporarily closed due to equipment damage. Officials expect it to reopen before the end of July.
Last summer saw a 27% rise in new lifeguard recruits for pools and beaches, helping meet demand. Visitors must follow pool rules: swimsuits are mandatory, and locks are required for personal belongings. Food, phones, and glass bottles are not permitted inside the pool areas. The pools will operate from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through early September. With expanded programs and improved staffing, the city aims to serve even more residents this season. Red Hook Pool’s reopening will further increase access for swimmers in Brooklyn.
