Davao prioritizes infant nutrition amid earthquake recovery efforts

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Davao is leading efforts to ensure proper nutrition for infants and young children in earthquake-affected areas. Breastfeeding remains the safest option for infant feeding during emergencies, with strict adherence to the Milk Code of the Philippines. Executive Order No. 51, also known as the Milk Code, bans the distribution of breast milk substitutes during disasters. This measure aligns with international guidelines from the Department of Health, WHO, and UNICEF, which regulate the use of such products in emergencies.

Improper preparation of powdered milk or formula in crisis conditions can lead to serious health risks for infants, including diarrhoea and infections. Exceptions to breastfeeding may apply for infants unable to nurse, but formula feeding must be overseen by trained health professionals.

NNC-Davao is working with local government units and humanitarian groups to incorporate nutrition-sensitive interventions into earthquake response. The region faces significant challenges, as Davao Occidental has the highest stunting rate (15.2%) and the highest prevalence of underweight children (7.27%) in the Davao Region.

The council is also monitoring the nutritional status of vulnerable groups, including infants, young children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Donors are reminded to coordinate with authorities before sending nutrition-related aid to affected communities. Compliance with the Milk Code and emergency nutrition protocols is critical to protecting the health of the youngest survivors. These measures aim to prevent illness and ensure safe feeding practices in disaster-stricken areas.
