Great Lent 2023 Begins: 48 Days of Fasting and Spiritual Reflection
Orthodox Christians began Great Lent on 15 March 2023. The fasting period will last 48 days, ending on 2 May 2023. It is a time of strict dietary restrictions and spiritual reflection. During Great Lent, believers abstain from meat, fish, milk, and eggs for seven weeks. On some days, only raw foods are permitted, while others require complete fasting. Allowed foods include vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, and mushrooms, with fish occasionally allowed.
The church advises simplicity in meals and discourages elaborate dishes. Certain groups, such as pregnant women, the sick, and those in heavy physical labour, are exempt from these rules. Fasting is not intended for weight loss, as it can lead to muscle loss instead of fat reduction.
To prevent hunger and nutrient deficiencies, followers are encouraged to increase plant-based protein intake. Nuts, seeds, and iron-fortified products help maintain energy and health. The Nativity Fast, another fasting period, has simpler rules but still restricts meat, dairy, and eggs. Great Lent imposes strict dietary guidelines for nearly seven weeks. The church provides exemptions for vulnerable groups and emphasises health and simplicity. Proper nutrition remains key to sustaining energy and well-being throughout the fast.
