Mary Ungs-Sogaard launches Iowa Senate bid with decades of advocacy

Mary Ungs-Sogaard has announced her candidacy for Iowa Senate District 33. The Democratic nomination came after a convention held on 16 June. She brings decades of experience in journalism, community work, and nonprofit leadership to her campaign. Born and raised in Luxemburg, Iowa, Ungs-Sogaard graduated from the University of Iowa with degrees in journalism, English, and education. She has worked with a local newspaper for over 30 years, taking on roles in management, journalism, and small business development.

Over 35 years ago, she helped establish The Kid Project, a nonprofit preschool and child care centre. In 2012, she was recognised as a Master Editor-Publisher in Iowa. For the past five years, she has managed donor relations for IowaWatch and The Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

Her campaign will focus on community engagement and collaboration. Key platform points include economic concerns, environmental care, healthcare, education, and civil and human rights. Ungs-Sogaard now steps into the political arena with a strong background in public service and advocacy. Her campaign aims to address pressing local and state issues through a collaborative approach. The Democratic party has officially backed her bid for the Iowa Senate.
