AREDS2 Supplements Slow Vision Loss in Advanced Macular Degeneration
New research highlights the benefits of AREDS2 supplements for those with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These supplements can slow disease progression and help preserve vision for longer. They are designed specifically for individuals with intermediate or advanced AMD. The original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) first showed that high doses of antioxidants and zinc could lower the risk of advanced AMD. Building on this, AREDS2 improved the formula by adding lutein and zeaxanthin, which better protect the eyes.
Studies found AREDS2 reduces the risk of progressing from intermediate to advanced AMD by about 25%. It also cuts the chance of severe central vision loss and offers an 18% lower risk of late-stage AMD compared to the original formula.
However, AREDS2 is not suitable for everyone. High zinc levels may cause copper deficiency, while too much vitamin E can increase bleeding risks. Mild side effects like stomach cramps and nausea have also been reported. Additionally, smokers or former smokers should avoid it due to a higher lung cancer risk linked to the original AREDS formula. AREDS2 supplements provide a proven way to slow AMD progression and protect vision. They are available for those with intermediate or advanced stages of the condition. Doctors recommend careful consideration of potential side effects and individual health risks before use.
