Kamala Harris Gains Overwhelming Backing as Black Women's Grants Launch

A new survey shows strong support for Kamala Harris among Black women, with about nine in ten backing her presidential bid. Meanwhile, the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium has announced a major grant initiative to support underserved communities across the South. The consortium will distribute $350,000 to 24 community organisations in 13 Southern states. These grants will fund projects tackling maternal health, gender-based violence prevention, and education for Black women and girls.

The announcement comes alongside the launch of the ‘Joy and Justice’ tour, which includes festivals, resource drives, and community events in nine cities. Chancé Lundy, the consortium’s executive director, highlighted the funding struggles many of these groups face under current political conditions.

LaTosha Brown, a co-founder, emphasised that Black women have long been active in liberal politics, making them a frequent target in today’s political landscape. Both Brown and Lundy noted that despite their key role in the South’s economy and culture, Black women continue to face discrimination and marginalisation.

Lundy hopes the tour and grants will empower Black girls to see themselves as leaders and problem-solvers. The tour’s message to young Black girls is clear: they matter now and are not victims but solutions to today’s challenges. It also aims to highlight Black women’s place in US history as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. The grants will provide vital resources to organisations working on critical issues for Black women and girls. The tour and funding aim to address longstanding inequalities while celebrating their contributions to society.
