Outreach 2026 Conference Explores LGBTQ Catholic Identity and Ministry Challenges

Over 450 people attended the Outreach 2026 Conference at Georgetown University. The event marked the fifth anniversary of Outreach, a ministry under the Jesuits’ America Media apostolate. Participants included laypeople, clergy, scholars, artists, educators, students, and family members. The conference began with a vigil Mass celebrated by Washington Cardinal Robert W. McElroy. During his address, he highlighted two developments from Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate that affect the LGBTQ community.

A panel on 'LGBTQ Catholics and Chastity: Diverse Lived Experiences' opened with remarks from Greg Krajewski, a filmmaker and incoming pastoral ministries student. Eve Tushnet, co-founder of Building Catholic Futures, presented three claims about chastity in relation to LGBTQ Catholics.

Kerry Alys Robinson, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, delivered a keynote address. The conference also addressed a controversial report on LGBTQ+ ministry from Study Group 9 of the Vatican’s 2021-2024 Synod of Bishops. Courage International criticised the report for mentioning their apostolate without prior consultation.

The event concluded with a 'sending forth' ceremony and a group photo of all attendees. The conference brought together diverse voices to discuss LGBTQ Catholic experiences. It also highlighted ongoing debates within the Church regarding ministry and inclusion. The Outreach ministry continues to grow as part of its mission under America Media.
