Sweden's First New Nuclear Plant in 40 Years Powers Ahead with Rolls-Royce SMR

Videberg Kraft has chosen Rolls-Royce SMR as the supplier for its nuclear power project on the Väro Peninsula near Ringhals. The selection marks Sweden’s first new nuclear plant in over 40 years. It also makes Sweden the third European country to adopt Rolls-Royce SMR technology. The Videberg Project will feature three small modular reactors, each with a 470 MWe capacity. Together, they aim to add around 1.5 GW to the national grid. The first unit is expected to begin operations in the mid-2030s, providing steady baseload power for at least 60 years.

Desirée Comstedt, acting CEO of Videberg Kraft, highlighted the company’s strong subcontractor network and the advantages of a European programme. Board members Tom Erixon and Anna Borg also praised the design, with Borg noting the reactor type and contractual structure as key strengths. Rolls-Royce SMR CEO Chris Cholerton welcomed the partnership, expressing confidence in the technology. The project will introduce a new generation of nuclear power to Sweden. The Rolls-Royce SMR design promises long-term, reliable energy supply. Construction and operation timelines will depend on regulatory and development progress.
