Nutrition Guidelines for Kids of Every Age

How Much of Each Food Group Do Kids Really Need Daily?

A balanced diet is essential for children’s health and growth. Experts recommend specific amounts of vegetables, proteins, and dairy to ensure they get the right nutrients in the right proportions. For vegetables, the recommended daily intake varies by age. Toddlers aged 12 to 23 months should eat between two-thirds and one cup. Children aged 2 to 4 years need 1 to 2 cups, while those aged 5 to 8 should have 1.5 to 2.5 cups. Older children, aged 9 to 13, require 1.5 to 3 cups for girls and 2 to 3.5 cups for boys. Teenagers aged 14 to 18 should aim for 2.5 to 3 cups for girls and 2.5 to 4 cups for boys.

A balanced plate should include half produce, one-quarter protein, and one-quarter starch, with a serving of dairy on the side. Calcium from dairy, such as milk and cheese, is vital, but intake should be limited to no more than three glasses of milk per day. Too much protein can strain the liver and kidneys, so moderation is key.

Added sugar should also be restricted. Children under 2 should have none, while those aged 2 and older should limit their intake to no more than 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons, per day. Following these guidelines helps ensure children receive the nutrients they need without excess. Proper proportions of vegetables, proteins, dairy, and limited sugar support their development and overall health.
