Northern California's New Smart Battery Program Cuts Costs and Boosts Grid Reliability

Ava Community Energy has launched a new initiative to support Northern California residents with energy storage. The SmartHome Battery program offers financial incentives for installing grid-connected batteries. It aims to improve grid reliability and help homeowners cut energy costs. Income-qualified customers in the region can now apply for up to $6,000 in upfront incentives. The offer covers the installation of a FranklinWH smart battery system. Those enrolled in CARE or FERA programs receive the full incentive plus additional ongoing payments.

Participants can choose how much battery capacity to share with the grid. Options include 40%, 60%, or 80% of their system’s total storage. The program allows utilities to use this stored energy during peak demand, preventing blackouts and easing grid pressure.

A larger backup battery lets homeowners power more appliances during outages. It also enables them to store electricity when rates are low and use it when prices rise. This reduces monthly bills and provides more predictable energy expenses. The SmartHome Battery program benefits both homeowners and utilities. Residents gain backup power and lower energy costs while supporting grid stability. Utilities access a flexible, distributed energy resource to manage demand more effectively.
