Researchers at Georgia State examined how dietary salt affects blood flow and mental performance in participants. The team observed brain activity in participants on both high-salt and low-salt diets using fMRI scans. Blood flow increased noticeably when individuals consumed more salt. This rise in blood flow was linked to changes in regions responsible for attention, reasoning, and executive function.
The study also noted that excessive salt consumption is tied to a higher risk of hypertension. Additionally, the brains of people with psychiatric conditions often show unusual responses to tasks, suggesting a possible connection between salt intake and neuropsychiatric health.
Researchers concluded that even in those without high blood pressure, salt may alter how the brain processes stimuli. A lower-sodium diet could help reduce hypertension and improve brain function. Further studies are required to clarify how high salt intake impacts individuals with hypertension or other medical conditions. The findings highlight the potential benefits of cutting salt for both heart and brain health.
