Assam CM pushes for expanded EAP funding to accelerate Northeast growth

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended a seminar on leveraging Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) in the Northeastern states. The event was chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Sarma used the platform to push for greater access to EAPs for the region’s development. During the seminar, Sarma highlighted the importance of EAPs in tackling developmental challenges across sectors. These include healthcare, education, infrastructure, environmental conservation, and capacity building. He described EAPs as a key driver in speeding up progress in the Northeast.

He pointed out that Assam alone has projects worth nearly ₹53,000 crore under the EAP framework. These cover major investments in bridges, embankments, healthcare facilities, and power transmission systems. The value of EAPs in Assam has grown from around ₹7,500 crore to its current level.

Sarma thanked Nirmala Sitharaman for her guidance at the seminar. He also called for higher financial limits under EAPs to allow state governments to take on larger projects. The seminar provided a space for knowledge sharing and collaborative planning among Northeastern leaders. The Chief Minister and Union Finance Minister reaffirmed their commitment to transforming the Northeast into a major economic contributor. Enhanced EAP access is expected to support more large-scale development projects in the region. The seminar strengthened cooperation for implementing these initiatives.
