Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has finished a major three-year upgrade to its High Energy Annex Test (HEAT) facility. The project cost over $13 million in 2025, funded entirely by SwRI. HEAT specialises in realistic testing of gas turbine combustors for propulsion and energy applications. The upgrade significantly boosted HEAT’s capabilities. Cost efficiency was a key focus of the renovation. Additive manufacturing cut combustor component costs by 80% compared to traditional production methods. The facility maintains continuous testing, unlike many competitors limited to intermittent runs.
