Russia's Crab Giant Trains Next Generation to Fix Maritime Labor Crisis

Primorsky Krai is struggling with a shortage of skilled workers in its maritime sector. The industry urgently needs navigators, engineers, technologists, and other trained professionals. Russian Crab Group has responded with a long-term initiative to tackle the crisis. In 2022, the company launched the 'Sea of Opportunities' program to attract young people to maritime careers. The scheme includes early engagement with schools and organises regular sea voyages for students.

The program aims to highlight the benefits of seafaring jobs, such as career growth, personal development, and strong salaries. Even if participants do not pursue maritime work, the initiative seeks to raise the status of these professions and encourage them to stay in coastal communities.

A key part of the effort is the 'Young Sailor School', created in partnership with Admiral G.I. Nevelskoy Maritime State University. The school offers tailored education, practical training, and internships to prepare students for future roles. The initiative provides structured support from school to first employment. It addresses the workforce gap by training new generations for maritime careers. The program also aims to secure a steady supply of qualified professionals for Primorsky Krai’s industry.
