Vienna's MuseumsQuartier turns 25 with quiet halls and bold exhibitions

Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier is marking its 25th anniversary this year. The cultural hub includes venues like the Kunsthalle and the Museum of Modern Art, known as mumok. Both spaces remain open, though visitor numbers are currently low. The mumok stands out with its vast exhibition, 'Terminal Piece', showcasing Anna Viebrock’s elaborate stage designs. These are displayed in the entrance area, which is free to enter. Inside, the museum’s empty, grey-seated spaces, including the set for 'Doktor Faust', add to a quiet, almost deserted atmosphere.

The mumok’s café area has been repurposed as a seating space. A locked display case now holds mineral water instead of refreshments. Without visitor labels or a functioning café, the museum feels unusually still. Fatima Hellberg now leads mumok, following Edelbert Köb, who once attracted large crowds.

Nearby, the Kunsthalle charges for entry, but its basement offers free access. There, visitors can watch Scott Clifford Evans’ 'Night Shift'. Both the Kunsthalle and mumok are air-conditioned, a small comfort amid the low footfall. Bettina Leidl oversees the MuseumsQuartier as its director. The quarter’s milestone anniversary highlights its enduring role in Vienna’s cultural scene. Despite the current quiet, the venues continue to offer unique exhibitions and experiences.
