Uttar Pradesh transforms women's lives with safety and economic reforms since 2014

Uttar Pradesh has seen notable progress since 2014 under the central Modi government and the state leadership of Yogi Adityanath. Women in the region have particularly benefited from these changes, with advancements in safety, education, and economic independence. Crime rates affecting women have dropped significantly during this period. The rate of dowry harassment and dowry deaths fell from 2.4 per lakh women in 2016 to 1.8 in 2024. Similarly, reported rapes decreased from 4.6 to 2.8 per lakh women over the same timeframe. Kidnapping cases involving women also declined, from 13,014 in 2016 to 7,919 in 2024.

Efforts to empower women have expanded across multiple areas. The Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana has supported over 2.737 million girls by providing financial aid for education and future security. Nearly 10 million women have joined Self-Help Groups, gaining access to credit and self-employment opportunities. The Lakhpati Didi campaign has enabled 1.855 million women to earn annual incomes of ₹100,000 or more.

Public services have also improved for women. The number of women police personnel increased from around 10,000 in 2017 to over 44,000, leading to faster resolution of complaints and more sensitive handling of cases. Additionally, the Ujjwala Yojana has provided free LPG connections to nearly 18.6 million families, reducing health risks from smoke exposure and saving time for women. These measures have contributed to tangible improvements in the lives of women in Uttar Pradesh. The decline in crime rates, combined with economic and social support programmes, has enhanced their safety, dignity, and self-reliance. The state reports a clear shift in conditions for women since 2014.
