Plumstead's historic library reborn as a thriving community hub

A historic library in Plumstead has been transformed into a vibrant new community hub. The Plumstead Centre, designed by Hawkins\Brown, now offers a mix of cultural, leisure and sports facilities under one roof. Local leaders have praised the project as a major step forward for the area.

The redevelopment took an underused Grade II listed library and turned it into a modern, multi-purpose space. Original features like barrel-vaulted skylights and parquet flooring were carefully restored to maintain the building's heritage. A two-storey extension at the rear, built with brick, glass and metal, added new facilities while blending with the existing structure.

Inside, the centre now houses separate children's and adults' libraries alongside a café and flexible collaboration areas. Sports and fitness options include a gym, badminton court and two large studios for performing arts, yoga or exhibitions. The design emphasises openness, allowing visitors to see across the entire building. This project marks the first phase of the Royal Borough of Greenwich's Urban Framework for Plumstead. Hawkins\Brown's work on the centre earned them both the 2022 RIBA London Award and the 2022 RIBA London Conservation Award. Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough, highlighted the new opportunities the centre brings to local residents.

The Plumstead Centre now stands as a key community asset, combining heritage with modern amenities. Its mix of cultural, leisure and sports facilities aims to serve a wide range of local needs. The building's design and accessibility reflect its role as a welcoming space for all.
