Young Musicians Explore Mariachi Traditions at Denver's Unique Camp

A mariachi music camp for young musicians took place at Metropolitan State University of Denver in April. The event drew students from across Colorado and beyond, including some travelling from as far as Arizona. Organisers aimed to introduce them to a new musical style while celebrating the state’s heritage.

The camp formed part of the Viva Southwest mariachi conference, led by Dr. Philip Ficsor, Assistant Professor of Music at MSU Denver. Many attendees had a background in classical music but wanted to explore mariachi traditions. Professional mariachis guided them through techniques and performances.

The programme also sought to develop a uniquely Colorado approach to mariachi. Alongside teaching the genre’s fundamentals, instructors encouraged students to connect with the state’s musical roots. Middle and high school pupils spent days practising and learning from experienced performers.

By the end of the camp, participants gained hands-on experience in mariachi music. The event helped bridge classical training with a new style while preserving Colorado’s cultural legacy. Organisers plan to continue the initiative in future years.
