Woman Dies in Bali Hotel After Extreme Fruitarian Diet Leaves Her Severely Malnourished

A 27-year-old woman died from severe malnutrition in a Bali hotel after following an extreme fruitarian diet. Karolina Krzyzak, who weighed just three-and-a-half stone at the time of her death, had refused medical help despite her rapidly declining health.

Karolina Krzyzak checked into Sumberkima Hill resort in December 2024. Staff immediately noticed her frail condition, having to carry her to her room. Over the following week, her health worsened as she stuck to a diet consisting almost entirely of fruit.

Hotel employees repeatedly offered medical assistance, but she declined each time. By the final days, she was too weak to move, requiring staff to help her turn over in bed. A concerned friend eventually contacted the hotel, prompting staff to check on her—only to find she had died.

Dieticians have long warned that fruitarian diets, which exclude most other food groups, can lead to severe malnourishment. Experts advise that fruit should make up no more than 25-30% of a balanced diet.

Karolina's death highlights the extreme risks of unbalanced diets. Those struggling with eating disorders can seek support from the BEAT Eating Disorders helpline at 0808 801 0677. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of restrictive eating without proper medical guidance.
