Wesel's 2026 Health Awareness Week Expands Access for All Communities

Wesel will host its next Health Awareness Week from April 20 to 25, 2026. The event, open to everyone, will kick off with a speech by the mayor and a lecture on stress and health. Organisers have planned a wide range of topics, from nutrition to discrimination, with a focus on accessibility for all.

This year's programme marks a shift from the 2022 edition, which centred solely on women's health. The 2026 event aims to include broader groups, particularly people with immigrant backgrounds, through low-threshold sessions and plain-language offerings.

The decision to bring back Health Awareness Week came in October 2025 during a regular networking meeting. Participants at the 'Wesel Connects' gathering, led by Integration Commissioner Lotte Goldschmidtböing, voted to revive the event for 2026. The City of Wesel is covering costs, including speaker and trainer fees, with a budget of around €2,000.

The week will begin at 2 p.m. on April 20 in the Council Chamber of Wesel City Hall. After the mayor's opening remarks, Sabine Fabek-Fest will deliver a lecture titled *Stress and Health*. Unlike the 2022 edition—which focused on women's health—this year's programme includes sessions on healthy eating, physical activity, and discrimination. Workshops are designed to be inclusive, with many offered in plain language to ensure accessibility. The event targets both the general public and professionals, though special attention is given to supporting people with immigrant backgrounds. All activities remain free for participants. 'Wesel Connects', the network behind the event, specialises in support for immigrant communities. The group meets twice a year to coordinate initiatives like Health Awareness Week, ensuring they reach diverse audiences.

Health Awareness Week 2026 will run for six days, offering free sessions on nutrition, movement, and social issues. The programme expands on past events by including more topics and ensuring accessibility for non-native speakers. Organisers hope the week will provide practical support and information to a wide range of participants.
