Washington's Chinatown roars into Lunar New Year with dazzling lion dance tradition

Washington, DC's Chinatown welcomed the Year of the Horse with a vibrant lion dance performance by the Hung Ci Lion Dance Troupe. The event, filled with color and tradition, marked the start of Lunar New Year celebrations in the city. Locals and visitors gathered to watch as the troupe, led by 'Teach,' brought the ancient ritual to life in front of more than a dozen businesses along the streets of Chinatown. The lion dance, accompanied by lively drumming and cymbals, drove away evil spirits while inviting good fortune and blessings for the new year. Business owners presented the lion with offerings of lettuce and oranges, symbols of prosperity, and spectators handed over red envelopes filled with money, believed to bring luck. The celebrations were organized by the Chinatown Lunar New Year Coalition, part of the 1882 Foundation, highlighting the city's cultural diversity and appreciation for Chinese traditions. The festivities will continue, culminating in a grand parade on Saturday, February 22, bringing even more color and energy to the celebrations in the heart of Washington, DC.
