Vienna's New Wine Bar Spotlights the Underrated Southern Wachau
A new wine bar has opened in Vienna's Alsergrund district, bringing a taste of the Wachau region to the city. Wachauerin, founded by Anna Polz, focuses on wines from the lesser-known southern shore of the Wachau, a stretch often overshadowed by its famous northern neighbour. The bar combines rustic charm with modern flair, offering a curated selection of local wines and small bites.
Anna Polz, the daughter of a vintner, chose Frankhplatz as the location for her wine bar. The area will soon benefit from improved transport links with the arrival of the new U5 metro line. Inside, the space blends dark wood, deep brown leather seating, and gold details, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A pop-art gallery of ancestral portraits adds a playful touch to the traditional decor.
The wine list highlights producers from the southern Wachau, including Martin Bergkirchner, Georg Frischengruber, Heinz Sigl, and Herbert Polz. While the northern side of the region—home to steep vineyards and renowned names like Prager and Knoll—dominates global recognition, the southern shore has quietly advanced. Over recent decades, growers here have invested in modern cellars, terraced vineyards, and organic production, focusing on native grapes like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Prices for a glass at Wachauerin range from €5.20 to €8.90.
For food, the menu features the Wachauer Laberl, a hearty bread-based snack designed to complement wine tastings, priced at €8.90 for three pieces. The bar welcomes guests from Monday to Wednesday, 4 PM to 11 PM, and stays open until midnight on Thursdays and Fridays. Saturdays are reserved for private events, with bookings available through the website, diewachauerin.at.
Wachauerin gives Vienna's wine lovers a chance to explore the underrated southern Wachau. With its carefully chosen wines, cosy setting, and convenient location, the bar aims to draw attention to a region often overlooked. The venue also provides a space for private gatherings, expanding its appeal beyond regular opening hours.
