Upcycling contest transforms waste into award-winning school chairs
A creative upcycling competition in North Rhine-Westphalia has crowned three winning chairs from 21 imaginative entries. The contest challenged schools to transform old materials into functional seating while promoting sustainability. Judges assessed each piece on originality, craftsmanship, and eco-friendliness—with input from public votes too.
The winning designs showcased both skill and environmental awareness. Kopernikus-Realschule took first place with Friendship Bench, a piece celebrating connection. LVR-Paul-Klee-Schule's Global Chair highlighted cultural diversity, while Prismaschule's Kitty's Paradise charmed with a playful, pet-themed concept.
Each chair resulted from months of collaboration between students and teachers. Their dedication turned discarded items into striking, usable furniture. The nearly €2,000 prize will now support the parent-teacher associations of the three schools, split equally among them. The initiative aimed to prove that sustainability can be engaging and accessible. By repurposing waste, participants demonstrated how creativity can reduce environmental impact. Organisers hope the project will inspire more schools to explore upcycling in future.
The competition recognised innovation while reinforcing practical sustainability. The three winning schools will share the prize money to fund further educational projects. Their success highlights how small-scale efforts can make a tangible difference in reducing waste.
