UCMed's Diabetes Center Earns Rare Clinic of Competence Title in Visayas

The University of Cebu Medical Center's (UCMed) Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DNC) has been named a Clinic of Competence by the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc. (PCDEF). The award was presented to Dr. April Melody Abcede, head of the DNC, during a ceremony on 11 November 2025. This recognition places UCMed among only two hospitals in Cebu—and the sole institution in the Visayas—to achieve this distinction so far.

Founded in 2016, UCMed's DNC was created to position the hospital as a leading centre for diabetes care. Over nearly a decade, it has worked closely with patients, offering diabetes self-management education, personalised counselling, and nutritional guidance. A team of doctors, nurses, and dietitians collaborates to help individuals manage their condition through proper meal planning and lifestyle adjustments.

The PCDEF certification confirms that UCMed's DNC meets strict standards for high-quality diabetes care and education. As of November 2025, no other hospitals or clinics in the Philippines have received this specific accreditation. Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua, PCDEF president, formally awarded the recognition to Dr. Abcede, marking a milestone for the centre. UCMed's leadership views the achievement as both an honour and a call to action. Medical Director Dr. Armando V. Tan emphasised the responsibility to keep improving services. The DNC remains focused on providing affordable yet advanced healthcare for diabetes prevention and long-term management.

The Clinic of Competence title reinforces UCMed's role as a key provider of diabetes care in the Visayas. The recognition also pushes the hospital to expand its programs and maintain high standards in patient support. With this accreditation, the DNC aims to further strengthen its partnerships with those living with diabetes across the region.
