Many Americans are increasing their risk of serious diseases without realising it. Simple food choices, like drinking fruit juice or eating fried chicken, can raise the chances of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. A doctor has now warned about two common dietary mistakes that could harm long-term health.
Dr. Frank Dumont, an internal medicine physician, points to fruit juice and breaded chicken as two problematic foods. While fruit juice may seem healthy, it lacks the fibre found in whole fruit. This fibre helps control blood sugar, improves insulin response and supports better cholesterol levels.
Breaded chicken, often deep-fried, absorbs unhealthy fats that raise 'bad' LDL cholesterol. These fats also promote inflammation, which can stiffen arteries and increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes. Dumont suggests swapping breaded options for grilled chicken to reduce harmful effects. A small change, like choosing a salad with grilled chicken instead of a fried chicken sandwich, can make a meal more balanced. Fresh, whole fruits also provide better nutrition and portion control than juice. Such adjustments help lower disease risks over time.
The USDA lists diets like the Mediterranean, vegetarian and DASH as health-promoting options. While no exact figures show how many doctors recommend these plans, experts agree on one thing: cutting back on fried foods and sugary drinks improves long-term health. Simple swaps—like whole fruit for juice or grilled for fried—can make a measurable difference.
