Toxic trail mix alert: Popular Studentenfutter brands fail contamination tests

A recent speed test of 29 Studentenfutter products has revealed concerning levels of contaminants in some popular brands. Conducted by ÖKO-TEST in February 2026, the study found mineral oil residues, pesticides, and even radioactive elements in certain mixes. Only a few products, including one from Lidl, passed without any detectable harmful substances.

The test covered a wide range of brands, from discount retailers to organic labels. Among them, ALDI SÜD, Tegut, Müller (Bio Primo), Kaufland (K-Bio), Penny (Naturgut), Rewe, and Aldi had their products evaluated. However, only three conventional mixes were found to be completely free of pesticides.

One standout was Lidl's Alesto Selection Studentenfutter Classic, which received a 'very good' rating. Unlike many competitors, it contained no detectable pesticides, mineral oil residues, or other concerning additives. The product also came at a lower price than some contaminated alternatives.

At the other end of the spectrum, Morgenland Bio Kerniges Studentenfutter was rated 'inadequate' due to problematic mineral oil residues (MOAH). Another poorly performing product was Öltje Studentenfutter Original, which contained nine different pesticides, including 'forever chemicals' (PFAS pesticides), making it the worst in the test.

The investigation also highlighted broader issues. A single food product can legally contain up to 100 different pesticides, even if each stays below its individual legal limit. When combined, these substances can produce up to 70% of the maximum toxic effect, raising concerns about long-term health risks. Additionally, Brazil nuts—a common ingredient in trail mixes—naturally absorb radioactive elements from radium-rich soils, posing a risk to certain consumer groups.

The findings underscore the importance of careful product selection when buying Studentenfutter. Lidl's Alesto Selection offers a clean, affordable option, while other brands show varying levels of contamination. Consumers looking to avoid pesticides, mineral oils, or radioactive exposure may need to check labels more closely or opt for certified alternatives.
