Texas Roadhouse and Chili's thrive as diners ditch fast food for sit-down meals

Casual dining chains are gaining ground as fast-food price hikes push customers toward sit-down meals. Texas Roadhouse and Chili's Grill & Bar have both reported strong growth, though rising beef costs and labour expenses continue to challenge steakhouses.

The shift in consumer habits is reshaping the restaurant industry, with some chains expanding while others focus on value-driven strategies to hold their market share.

Texas Roadhouse has strengthened its position since inflation pressures began in 2022. The chain achieved comparable store sales growth of 12.5% in 2023 and 8.2% in 2024, outperforming rivals like Darden Restaurants and Brinker International. Key factors include controlled menu price increases of around 5%, wage inflation held to 4%, and a focus on guest satisfaction, which drove a 4.3% rise in guest counts last quarter.

The company has also expanded aggressively, adding 45 new locations in 2024. Plans for 2026 include opening 35 more company-owned restaurants. To improve efficiency, Texas Roadhouse recently completed a systemwide switch to digital kitchens, boosting order accuracy and speed.

Meanwhile, Chili's Grill & Bar has seen 19 straight quarters of growth, thanks to popular deals like the 3 for Me and Triple Dipper menus. Darden Restaurants, leveraging its scale, has kept prices at LongHorn Steakhouse around 3.2% below inflation. Yet, steakhouses still face pressure from high beef costs, squeezing profit margins.

Texas Roadhouse's disciplined approach—avoiding deep discounts while maintaining value perception—has helped it gain market share. The chain's latest quarter showed a 6.1% jump in same-store sales, proving its strategy works even as consumer spending habits evolve.

The casual dining sector is growing, but steakhouses must balance rising costs with customer demand. Texas Roadhouse's expansion and focus on efficiency have set it apart, while competitors like Chili's and Darden rely on value-driven menus and pricing strategies.

As fast-food chains keep raising prices, sit-down restaurants are becoming a more attractive option for budget-conscious diners.
