Students in Viersen Turn Healthy Recipes Into a Sustainability Movement

A new school project in Viersen District has encouraged students to cook healthy recipes while learning about sustainability. The 'Snack Heroes: Healthy Recipes, Big Impact' initiative launched in September 2025 at Schwalmtal Community School. Over 13 weeks, ninth-grade pupils explored nutrition, mental health, and eco-friendly food choices.

The project formed part of the Healthy Municipality Network, a prevention programme running until 2027. Supported by health insurers AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse, it focuses on youth well-being. Students prepared snacks for the school cafeteria using rescued ingredients and even created their own cookbook.

Guests from Viersen District’s Waste Management Authority and a food-sharing representative joined the sessions. They taught pupils how to reduce food waste and make sustainable choices. The students’ efforts included a popular apple crumble, which impressed both teachers and local officials. Mayor Andreas Gisbertz praised the pupils’ enthusiasm and the project’s positive influence. District Administrator Bennet Gielen also highlighted their dedication to healthier eating habits. The initiative’s impact extended beyond the classroom, reaching the wider school community.

The project has raised awareness about nutrition and sustainability among young people. More details can be found at www.gesundekommune-kreis-viersen.de. The Healthy Municipality Network will continue its work in Viersen District until April 2027.
