Smart robots are revolutionizing the construction industry—meet Sitegeist

A Munich-based startup called Sitegeist is developing intelligent robots to transform the construction industry. Originally named Aiina Robotics, the company now focuses on modular robotic systems designed to work safely alongside human workers. Their first application will be high-pressure water jetting for concrete renovation—a task that traditionally requires significant manual labour.

Sitegeist was founded by Julian Hoffmann, Claus Carste, Lena Pätzmann, and Nicola Kolb during their master's studies in robotics and AI at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Their technology builds on revolutionary safety systems developed at TUM, allowing robots to operate in close proximity to humans without risk.

The company's software automates complex surface treatments, a first in the industry. This innovation aims to boost productivity and address labour shortages on construction sites. However, the biggest hurdle remains: creating a technically robust product that can withstand harsh site conditions and perform reliably.

Within a year, Sitegeist plans to roll out a working product on real construction sites. Over the next five years, they intend to expand their modular system to cover more of the building renovation process. The team emphasises a long-term vision—building a stable, sustainable business that drives meaningful change in construction.

Munich's startup ecosystem has played a key role in their progress. The city's research-focused environment and strong support networks provide essential resources for early-stage companies like Sitegeist.

Sitegeist's robots could soon appear on construction sites, starting with concrete renovation tasks. The company's focus on safety, modularity, and real-world reliability sets it apart in an industry facing persistent labour challenges. If successful, their technology may reshape how renovation work is carried out in the coming years.
