Dozens of people gathered on April 26 for the annual Run for Joy event, a five-kilometre race honouring the memory of Sarah Joy Short. Participants donned bunny ears as they ran to raise money for the Fresh Air Fund, a charity close to Short’s heart. The event has already brought in over $20,000 this year. Sarah Joy Short, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 22, spent three summers working at Camp Hurontario. There, she formed lasting friendships and inspired those around her. In 2019, her friend Emily Litt and a group of others organised the first Run for Joy to keep her legacy alive.
The event quickly became a tradition, with more than 100 runners taking part in its inaugural year. Attendance has varied since, with around 60 participants joining in 2023. Each year, the race supports the Fresh Air Fund, which helps cover camp costs for children from low-income families.
The charity provides grants to day and overnight camp programmes, ensuring more children can experience outdoor activities. Since its launch, the Run for Joy has grown into a key fundraiser, combining community spirit with a meaningful cause. This year’s Run for Joy has already exceeded $20,000 in donations for the Fresh Air Fund. The event continues to honour Sarah Joy Short’s passion for camping and her impact on others. Organisers and participants alike remain committed to supporting children in need through her memory.
