Regensburg's Organic Farming Project Expands to 3,500 Students by 2028
A project bringing organic farmers into schools has expanded significantly in the Regensburg region. Since 2023, around 3,500 students have taken part in hands-on lessons about sustainable food. Now, with fresh funding and broader reach, the initiative is set to grow even further by 2028.
The 'Organic Farmer Goes to School!' project has entered a new phase, backed by €65,760 from the Sanddorf Foundation. This funding will support activities from 2025 to 2028, focusing on regional organic products and sustainable eating habits. The initiative now includes all school types up to 10th grade, starting from September 2025.
Currently, 38 schools with 165 classes—70 of them in the district—are taking part. Organic farmers Heidi Ziegaus and Christin Ebenbeck will lead interactive 90-minute sessions, visiting classrooms up to five times a week. New toolkits will also help teachers explore topics like organic beef and grain production in engaging ways. While exact figures for Bavaria-wide participation are unclear, broader sustainability efforts show strong interest. A total of 668 schools in the region have earned the title *Umweltschule in Europa* for their work in education for sustainable development.
The project's expansion means more students will learn directly from farmers about organic food and sustainability. With structured funding and practical resources, the initiative aims to make regional organic farming a familiar topic in classrooms. By 2028, organisers hope to see deeper awareness of sustainable diets across the region.
