Primogene's Lab-Grown Breast Milk Molecules Revolutionize Infant Nutrition and Beyond
Leipzig-based biotech startup Primogene is making waves with its innovative production of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The company has already begun generating revenue through partnerships and pre-orders, while scaling up its operations in a new, larger facility.
Its proprietary enzymatic technology allows industrial-scale production of eight key bioidentical milk sugars, some of which are now commercially available in infant formula.
Primogene specialises in creating bioidentical compounds, with a core focus on human milk oligosaccharides—complex sugar structures that rank as the third-largest solid component in breast milk. These molecules offer significant health benefits and are being tested in collaboration with Leipzig's Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology.
The startup has successfully produced eight distinct HMOs, including 2'-FL and 3-FL, which are already used in infant formula. Others, such as LNT, LNnT, and sialylated HMOs, are in advanced development or entering the market early in 2026. Beyond infant nutrition, Primogene also supplies bioidentical molecules for skincare ingredients and pharmaceutical raw materials.
Funding has come from biotech investors like Climate Founders, alongside grants from the state of Saxony and the city of Leipzig. The company's growing reputation was further boosted in 2024 when it secured third place in the Saxon Founders' Award, expanding its industry connections.
To meet rising demand, Primogene has moved into a larger Leipzig facility, enabling greater production capacity and supporting its next phase of growth.
Primogene's technology is now delivering commercially available HMOs, with more products nearing market readiness. The company's expansion and investor backing position it to supply bioidentical compounds across nutrition, skincare, and pharmaceutical sectors. Its ongoing research and scaling efforts aim to meet demand for these health-promoting molecules.
