Philippines and Japan deepen agricultural trade to boost exports and food security

The Philippines is strengthening its agricultural ties with Japan to boost exports and improve food security. Officials have discussed expanding market access for key products like bananas and pomelos while exploring new trade opportunities. During recent talks, Philippine representatives asked for reduced tariffs on banana exports. The move comes as the country prepares for possible entry into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Japan remains the largest overseas market for Philippine bananas, making trade conditions a priority.

The two nations also explored ways to enhance logistics and agricultural technology cooperation. A delegation visited Japanese facilities to study advanced post-harvest systems, including grain storage methods. Japan’s ability to store rice for up to five years contrasts sharply with the Philippines’ 30-day buffer stock policy, highlighting potential improvements for the National Food Authority.

Plans are underway to introduce Philippine pomelos to the Japanese market by late 2026. Additionally, the country will participate in a 2027 horticulture expo in Japan, showcasing fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants. Horticulture is seen as a growing sector due to rising global demand for high-value agricultural goods. The partnership aims to increase Philippine agricultural exports while adopting better storage and processing techniques. If successful, these efforts could strengthen food security and open new trade opportunities in key markets like Japan.
