Pakistan's rural crisis: Malnutrition rises alongside obesity in a shifting diet

Pakistan is grappling with a growing health crisis as malnutrition and obesity rise side by side. Rural areas face worsening food insecurity, yet residents there now consume more free sugars and fats than city dwellers. The shift comes as cheap, processed foods flood local markets, pushing traditional diets aside.

Over the past five years, malnutrition and food insecurity have deepened in rural Pakistan. At the same time, the intake of sweets and snack foods has surged. This contradiction stems from several factors: lower prices for ultra-processed goods, shrinking traditional farming, urbanisation pressures, and aggressive food industry marketing in previously underserved regions.

The country's food system produces enough calories but falls short on nutrition. While staple foods are widely available, balanced diets remain out of reach for millions. Women and children bear the brunt of this imbalance, facing higher risks of stunting and diet-related diseases.

As a result, Pakistan now faces a double burden—malnutrition alongside rising obesity. The strain on public health is growing, with hospitals and clinics under increasing pressure to treat preventable conditions linked to poor diets.

The trend highlights a troubling gap between food availability and nutritional quality. Rural communities, despite economic challenges, now consume more unhealthy fats and sugars than urban populations. Without intervention, the dual crisis of malnutrition and obesity will continue to weigh on Pakistan's health system and overall well-being.
