New Documentary When Men Dance Challenges Cultural Taboos Through Movement
A new documentary called When Men Dance explores the challenges faced by male dancers who defy cultural taboos. Directed by Iranian-born filmmaker Abbas 'Abbi' Motlagh, the film follows performers as they share their personal struggles and triumphs. Filmed over several weeks in Miami, it highlights a vibrant dance community at the city’s Men Who Dance festival. The film features dancers from diverse backgrounds, each with a unique story. Antonio Velasquez, a Miami native, found the filmmaking process healing, while Nataneal Leal, a nonbinary dancer from Brazil, initially hesitated to share their journey. Clinton Harris, another performer, explains that he communicates best through movement rather than words.
Motlagh, who grew up in Iran where men dancing together was common, contrasts this with the stigma many face elsewhere. Producer Anne Pollack emphasises that male dance is a global phenomenon, not limited to one culture. The documentary draws parallels to the 2000 film *Billy Elliot*, in which a young boy in northern England pursues ballet against his father’s wishes. Through interviews and performances, the film captures the emotional and physical demands of breaking stereotypes. The dancers speak openly about the obstacles they overcame to embrace their passion.
When Men Dance sheds light on the resilience of male performers in a field often met with resistance. The documentary, set against the backdrop of Miami’s dance festival, offers a raw look at their journeys. It will premiere at local and international film events in the coming months.
