Tierpark seeks name for chimpanzee baby - Munich Zoo Invites Public to Name Rare Baby Chimpanzee Before Deadline

Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich has welcomed a new arrival—a baby female chimpanzee born in February. The public is now being invited to help name the youngster, with submissions open until March 25. The newborn belongs to a critically endangered subspecies, making her birth especially significant.

The baby chimpanzee is a Central African chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes), native to the rainforests of Cameroon, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her parents, father Jambo and mother Zenta, share the Jungle House exhibit with her, though the family can also retreat to private, secluded areas when needed.

Those suggesting a name must follow one key rule: it has to start with the letter 'A'. Zoo officials have also encouraged ideas inspired by the chimpanzees' African heritage, reflecting their natural origins. The subspecies is classified as critically endangered, with wild populations facing severe threats. This birth adds to conservation efforts, offering hope for the species' future.

The naming competition runs until March 25, giving the public a chance to contribute to the zoo's latest addition. Visitors can see the baby, her mother, and father in the Jungle House. The zoo continues to highlight the importance of protecting endangered primates like the Central African chimpanzee.
