A new green space called Coastal Road Gardens is taking shape along Mumbai's southern coastline. The project, led by the Reliance Foundation, will transform 70 hectares of reclaimed land into a botanical garden. Unveiled as part of a corporate social responsibility initiative, it aims to create a 'Green Necklace' near Marine Drive's iconic Queens Necklace.
The draft concept plan for Coastal Road Gardens was first presented at a citizens' dialogue organised by the South Mumbai Residents Association. Nita Ambani, head of the Reliance Foundation, later renamed the landscaping work along the Coastal Road south.
The gardens will occupy a 5.5 km stretch, with 55% of the area dedicated to forests and woodlands. Another 25% will serve as open recreational spaces, while 10% each will cover pathways and plazas. Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) will handle the operation and maintenance of the promenade.
Visitors can expect a range of amenities, including a Maidan/Flex field, sports courts, and outdoor gyms. There will also be social gardens, children's play areas, and an amphitheatre. Additional features include garden trails, a sunset view gallery, a Ferris wheel, and a festival plaza. The project is estimated to cost Rs 400 crore and is expected to be completed within three seasons.
Seven access points are planned along the route, connecting Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy, Haji Ali, Mahalaxmi, and Worli. However, no details are currently available on how many of these entry points have been built or are under construction.
The Coastal Road Gardens will add a major green space to Mumbai's waterfront. Once finished, it will offer residents and visitors a mix of nature, recreation, and cultural attractions. The project's completion timeline remains tied to the three-season target set by its developers.
