Montgomery County Shelter Overflows as 100+ Dogs Face Urgent Crisis

Montgomery County's animal shelter has reached full capacity, with over 100 dogs in urgent need of homes. The situation became critical over the weekend, particularly for larger breeds. Officials are now asking the public for help to avoid drastic measures. Between March 4 and March 6, the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) took in 29 canines. This sudden influx pushed the shelter's dog population beyond its limits. A recent 'Mutt Madness' event helped rehome some animals, but many larger breeds—including bully breeds—still remain unadopted.

Housing restrictions often prevent these dogs from being adopted, as some rental properties ban certain breeds. The shelter has warned that euthanasia due to lack of space could become necessary if the situation doesn't change soon. To ease pressure, MCASAC is urging residents who find lost pets to temporarily care for them before bringing them in. The shelter also encourages fostering, offering all necessary supplies at no cost. Those looking to adopt must bring a leash and collar for dogs or a pet carrier for cats. Adoptions are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The shelter's overcrowding crisis highlights the need for community support. Without more adoptions or foster homes, space constraints may force difficult decisions. Residents willing to help can visit MCASAC to adopt, foster, or temporarily care for a pet in need.
