Modi Gifts Putin Kashmiri Saffron, Boosting Its Global Prestige
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a collection of gifts showcasing India's rich heritage. Among the items was Kashmiri saffron, celebrated for its deep colour, strong aroma, and health benefits. The gesture highlights the growing global appreciation for the region's prized produce.
The gifts included Kashmiri saffron, a handcrafted marble chess set, Assam tea, and Maharashtra handicrafts. Each item was chosen to reflect India's diverse cultural and agricultural traditions. Kashmiri saffron, in particular, has gained international recognition for its premium quality.
Over the past five years, global demand for Kashmiri saffron has risen by 15–20%. This surge is driven by a growing preference for organic and high-end food products. The biggest buyers now include the USA, Germany, France, the UAE, and Japan.
Local leaders in Kashmir welcomed the move. Syed Akhtar Hussain described the saffron as a symbol of the region's value and praised Modi's efforts to promote it worldwide. Burhan Din, a saffron farmer, expressed pride in seeing Kashmiri saffron gifted to Putin. He urged fellow farmers to boost production to meet increasing global demand.
The gift of Kashmiri saffron to Putin underscores its status as a sought-after luxury product. With rising international demand, the region's farmers now face new opportunities to expand cultivation. The recognition is expected to further strengthen Kashmir's position in the global saffron market.
