Newspaper Carrier Defies Icy Roads - On Horseback Through Wiedenrode - Meet the German postman who delivers news today by horseback in winter
In the small village of Wiedenrode, Lower Saxony, Marcus Zotan has found an unusual way to deliver newspapers during winter. Instead of walking or cycling, he relies on his 23-year-old gelding, Wilko, to navigate icy roads safely. The pair have become a familiar sight as they complete their early-morning news today rounds together.
Zotan chose horseback delivery after realising harsh winter conditions made walking or biking difficult. Wilko covers a three-kilometre route, helping to drop off around ten papers each morning. To comply with German road traffic laws—which classify horses as vehicles—the gelding wears a saddle, high-visibility vest, reflectors, and a taillight for visibility.
After finishing the route, Wilko receives a special reward. His meal includes dried apple slices, muesli, and carrots, topped off with a small shot of beer to aid digestion. The routine ensures both Zotan and his horse stay comfortable while working in the cold.
The method has proven practical, allowing Zotan to avoid the risks of slippery paths. Wilko's steady pace and strength make the deliveries smoother than traditional methods in winter weather.
Zotan's approach highlights how adaptability can overcome seasonal challenges. By using Wilko, he ensures newspapers reach residents reliably, even in freezing conditions. The horse's safety gear and post-work treat also reflect the care taken to keep him fit for the job.
