Mapunapuna's hidden gems: Two family-run restaurants redefine local dining

Mapunapuna, once home to ancient Hawaiian fishponds, has transformed into a busy industrial and dining area. Warehouses, factories, and eateries now fill the space, built on artificial fill over the years. Among the newer spots, two family-run restaurants have quickly gained attention for their hearty meals and local flavours. The area’s shift from traditional fishponds to an industrial zone began decades ago. Land was expanded using artificial fill, making way for businesses and factories. Today, the streets are lined with auto dealerships, stores, and a growing number of restaurants.

In April 2019, Derek Takamoto opened **Taka’s Box Lunch**, a casual spot serving local comfort food. The family-run business offers dishes like beef stew, loco moco, and daily bentos—each meal comes with a drink. Takamoto’s wife and children help run the restaurant, keeping the menu affordable and the portions generous. Nearby, **Souza’s Fish House** opened in August 2022, specialising in Japanese-style donburi bowls. Owner Ryan Souza imports fish from Japan for dishes like the $27 Souza Special and the Fish House Chirashi. Both restaurants share limited parking, a common challenge in the busy Mapunapuna area.

Taka’s Box Lunch and Souza’s Fish House add to Mapunapuna’s mix of industrial activity and local dining. The two eateries focus on fresh ingredients, large servings, and reasonable prices. Their presence reflects the area’s ongoing change, blending old traditions with new business growth.
