Manx Bard Michael Manning unveils Graih, a poetic tribute to community and landscape

Michael Manning, the eighth Manx Bard, will launch his latest poetry collection in November. Titled Graih: Prophetic-Utopian Poems, the book draws on his years of community work and deep connection to the Isle of Man. The free event will feature readings, live music, and refreshments, with all donations supporting local charities.

Manning has lived on the island since childhood and has long been involved in writing and social causes. His new collection explores themes of faith, justice, politics, and humour, alongside reflections on the Manx landscape. Many poems stem from his time working with people facing homelessness and insecure housing through the former charity Graih.

The launch takes place on November 8, where Manning will read selections from the book. Attendees can take home a free copy, with voluntary donations going to Graih Ministries and Christian Aid. After the event, the collection will be available at public libraries and select bookshops across the island, also free of charge.

Culture Vannin, which helped fund the project, highlighted its cultural and social significance. Manning's appointment as Manx Bard in 2022 further inspired his poetic work. Those interested in contacting him can reach out via email at [email protected].

The collection offers a mix of poetic styles, from celebrations of Manx nature to stories of marginalised voices. Free copies will remain accessible in libraries and bookshops, ensuring wide reach. Donations from the launch will directly aid organisations supporting vulnerable communities on the island.
