Makati workshop tackles clearer food labels for smarter shoppers
A workshop on improving food labels will take place in Makati City on May 8, 2025. Organised by Mondelēz International and another company, the event aims to bring together experts and stakeholders. The focus will be on making front-of-pack labels clearer and more useful for shoppers.
The 'Think Tank for Effective Front-of-Pack Labels' will explore different labelling systems. These labels help consumers quickly compare products and manage their diets. They appear on the front of packaging and highlight key nutritional details. Front-of-pack labels give a quick overview of a product’s nutritional content. They help people decide if a food fits their dietary needs or lifestyle. Three main types of labels are widely used: GDA, Nutri-Grade or Nutri-Score, and Warning Labels.
GDA labels list calories, sugars, fats, saturated fats, and salt per serving. They also show how much each contributes to a person’s daily intake. This system helps consumers track their nutrition in relation to recommended limits.
Nutri-Grade or Nutri-Score uses letters or colours to rate overall nutritional quality. The score is based on set criteria, making it easier to compare similar products at a glance. Warning Labels, on the other hand, use black stop signs or symbols. These highlight when a product is high in sugar, salt, or fat.
Each system has its own advantages. GDA provides detailed breakdowns, while Nutri-Score offers a simple rating. Warning Labels directly flag unhealthy ingredients. The upcoming workshop will discuss how to refine these concepts for better consumer understanding. The event will gather different groups to discuss labelling improvements. Clearer front-of-pack labels could help shoppers save time and make healthier choices. The workshop’s outcomes may influence future food packaging standards.
