A New Semester Kicks Off in Mainz—Here's How Students Can Make the Most of It
For many students in Mainz, the new semester begins on April 13 with the start of lectures at the university. That means it's back to attending classes and seminars, writing papers, and spending long hours in the library—sandwiched between books and laptops. But with all that hard work, it's just as important to give those hardworking minds a break. Fortunately, Mainz isn't just a city with a major university—it's also packed with deals and perks for students, especially now that spring is in the air.
Nightlife: Discounts for Partygoers
Students looking to let off some steam will find plenty of bars and clubs in Mainz offering special deals. Wednesdays are particularly worth marking in your calendar: popular spots like Domsgickel and Klingelbeutel knock 20% off drinks. If you're up for keeping the night going, head to Schon Schön or Redcat. Schon Schön offers free entry on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while Redcat lets students in for free every Thursday.
Sports and Culture on a Budget
Sports fans aren't left out either. FSV Mainz 05 offers discounted tickets for students who want to catch a match. And if you'd rather get active yourself, Stadtbad Taubertsberg provides reduced-entry rates for a workout or a swim.
But the savings don't stop at sports and nightlife. The Staatstheater Mainz has teamed up with Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Catholic University of Mainz to give students free access to performances. If you're enrolled at either institution, just show your student ID and personal ID at the box office up to three days before a show to claim your free ticket. Other students, as well as trainees and federal volunteers, can snag a Hop-on-Ticket for just €5 three days before any performance.
For those who prefer film over theater, the Capitol arthouse cinema is a great option. And students can also save big at museums like the Landesmuseum and the Natural History Museum.
One Key Rule: Always Bring Your Student ID
To take advantage of these deals, you'll need to have your student ID ready—most places won't honor the discounts without it.
