Heather more famous than industry in Lower Saxony - Lüneburg Heath outshines Volkswagen as Lower Saxony's top brand

The Lüneburg Heath has become the most recognisable brand in Lower Saxony, according to a recent survey. The Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy found that 78% of Germans link the region to its famous heathland—more than Volkswagen or the North Sea. Tourism officials have hailed the results as a major boost for the area.

The survey places the Lüneburg Heath above other well-known symbols of Lower Saxony. Volkswagen followed closely at 76%, while agriculture and the North Sea scored 75% and 71% respectively. Ulrich von dem Bruch, managing director of Lüneburger Heide GmbH, called the findings a 'fortunate coincidence' and a 'blessing' for local tourism.

The region has also seen three straight years of record-breaking overnight stays. Von dem Bruch credits this success to innovative marketing strategies. He argues that tourism's economic impact is often overlooked and deserves greater financial support. Beyond tourism, von dem Bruch believes a strong regional brand helps all local businesses. He welcomed the state government's recent tender for a new campaign promoting Lower Saxony as a business destination. The initiative aims to build on the heath's growing reputation.

The survey confirms the Lüneburg Heath's status as Lower Saxony's leading symbol. With visitor numbers rising and recognition at an all-time high, the region's tourism sector looks set to benefit further. Officials now hope the momentum will attract more investment and support for local enterprises.
